Baseball and Softball Sweep Urbandale
June 25, 2021
After both doubleheaders ended Wednesday night, Johnston’s season sweep of rival Urbandale became complete in short order. Both the baseball and softball teams found success against Urbandale, combining for a perfect 8-0 record on the season. The two baseball teams had previously met on June 7th, Johnston winning 8-2 and 9-3 in a previous doubleheader. Top-ranked Johnston showed dominance at home later in the season, winning 15-3 and 13-0 on the 23rd. Both games were stopped after the fifth inning, due to the application of the mercy rule. Both Johnston and Urbandale have enjoyed enormous amounts of recent baseball success, with each program taking home two state championships in the last four years.
The softball team was equally perfect, winning handily (9-3 and 12-2) on the 23rd. The earlier series was more competitive at times with 2-0 and 10-2 victories taking place on the seventh. The third-ranked softball team in the state’s record improved to 26-5 on the season, while maintaining a perfect 16-0 record in the conference. Johnston’s baseball team also improved to a 24-3 record. Both teams appear to be playing at a championship-caliber level as their respective seasons start to wind down.
