Boys’ basketball beats Des Moines Hoover 60-40

The boys’ basketball team extended their win streak to eight games with a win against the top-ranked Des Moines Hoover Huskies to improve to 18-3 on the season Feb. 16 by the score of 60-40. It was senior night so seniors Boston Grimes ’18, Camden Vander Zwaag ’18, Bo Sandquist ’18, Chandler Heiser ’18, Mitch Hunerdosse ’18, Imani Muganza ’18, and Jacob Skidmore ’18 were honored before the game with their parents. The game started out slow with the score being only being 10-6 in favor of Johnston by the end of the first quarter but in the second Peyton Williams, ’18 took control and by halftime had 12 points while giving his team a 21-10 lead into halftime. The third quarter was when Johnston put the game to bed when Bo Sandquist ’18 hit four threes and extended their lead to 20, he ended the game with 14 points on four of six three-point shooting. Late in the fourth quarter lesser used seniors Hunerdosse, Muganza, and Skidmore came into the game for their last regular season home game to a large applause.

Williams dominated the game 20 points on nine of ten shooting and had seven rebounds and two steals. Vander Zwaag also had a big game scoring 13 points on four of seven shooting with three threes he also had five assists and two steals. Grimes finished the game with seven points two rebounds and four assists. Nathan Newcomb ’19 finished the game with six points, seven rebounds and four assists.
