BTS of the B&W
The student-run newspaper doesn’t always run smoothly. Our readers only see the finished product at the end of the month, but now we’re pulling back the curtain to show you just how much work goes into creating the stories that you read. Welcome to the Behind the Scenes of the Black & White. -JHS B&W Staff
Joel Kellar Cries
Most say drinking salt out of a bag will hurt you. Staff writer, Joel Kellar '21, wanted to prove the haters wrong. He drank the salt out of his giant pretzel bag like a mighty warrior. Then, he proceeded to cry. Tears welled up in his eyes like he just watched his favorite movie "The Notebook." Kellar refutes these claims, saying "I did not cry." Kellar appeared to be crying when he said this.
BTS of October Issue Burn
Watching the newspaper staff work, nine times out of 10, we look pretty put together. Except when we reach burn, the day we send our paper off to the printer. Needing everybody's attention, Editor-in-Chief Andrew Maresca '19 decided to take a more unconventional - and dangerous - approach, by walking on the tables while talking. Needless to say, it worked.
BTS of the Iowa State Journalism Convention
6:00 a.m. Thursday. October 25. The charter bus? Gassed up and ready to go. The newspaper staff? Present. The yearbook staff? All four of them are accounted for. Leslie Shipp? Nowhere to be found. And the bus had yet to pull out of the parking lot...
BTS of getting the right angle
Getting the right photo isn’t always as easy as clicking a button. In order to get the picture for the Arts and Entertainment page for the October Issue, Feature Editor Taylor Siebert ‘20 had to find the perfect angle to photograph her food spread. This consisted of using two poster boards in order to reflect light and use as a back drop as well as standing and crouching on her dining room table....
BTS of the October Idea Sessions
Though we wish they were, the ideas behind the stories in every issue aren’t just handed to us. Before we could start working on the October issue, the Black and White staff gathered to pitch ideas. Some good, some not so good. We came up with 143 ideas over two days. From there, the editorial board met to narrow it down to the 31 stories you will read about in our upcoming issue. ...
BTS of the apple peeler
The Arts and Entertainment page for the October issue is dedicated to fall treats. Online Editor Ada Basic '20 was the designated baker, with Feature Editor Taylor Siebert '20 and Cadee Siebert '22 there for assistance. Baking and photographing these treats came with many behind the scenes moments. One of which is the apple peeler. In order to make the mini apple pies, 3 apples needed to be peeled...
BTS of Sept. In-Depth
In order to get a quality photo of trash for the September in-depth, the editors got their hands a little dirty.
