The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards is a yearly event that occurs at the Des Moines Performing Arts center. This event celebrates the accomplishments high school musicians have made over the past year. There are over 80 schools that participated in the 2022 musical theater awards ranging from small to some of the largest schools in Iowa. Johnston being one of those many schools, brought home many deserving awards.

A senior, Mia Mattingly ‘22 was involved in many musical activities including show choir, choir, and musicals during highschool. She personally received the Outstanding Performer in a principal role award which is the highest award an individual can receive as well as getting nominated for the triple threat award. The triple threat award is a nationwide program for the top high school musical theatre performers. Mattingly expresses her joy by saying “This award is something I never dreamed of receiving!”

Johnston’s choir director Jeremy Fitzpatrick has helped many kids thrive through the years with their musical activities. “I absolutely could not have gotten to where I am without our amazing director, Mr. Fitzpatrick!” said Mattingly. One thing that Mattingly said that sets Johnston apart is “we are able to include everyone in the cast which is so amazing.” Johnstons choral program has been successful through the years and still continues to be as they gain more talent through the years.
