The boys and girls varsity basketball team both played Waukee on Tuesday Dec. 4. The girls won their matchup with second ranked Waukee by eight with a final score of 49-41. The boys didn’t have the same success losing by 15 by a final score of 52-37.

The girls impove to 5-1 after the win, while Waukee goes to 2-1. Throughout the first half the two teams were trading the lead back and forth but Johnston had a two point lead going into the half. The third quarter was key for the Dragons as they were able to extend the lead to seven going into the fourth quarter, where Johnston held on tow in 49-41. Maya McDermott ’20 lead the team in scoring with 18 points on 4-12 three point shooting she also had two steals. Maddie Mock ‘2o recorded a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Kendall Nead ’20 scored 11 points on 4-9 shooting.

The boys go to 1-2 on the year while Waukee goes to 3-0 in a matchup from last year’s state quarterfinals. The game was close for the first half with Waukee going into the break with a three point lead. Waukee proved to be two good in the second half outscoring them by 12 points and taking control of the game and going on to win 52-37.
