Girls Win, Boys Finish 4th at Tom Karpan Invite

The girls Cross Country team added another meet win to their resume winning the Varsity at the Tom Karpan Invite hosted by Valley High School, they also finished third in the JV race. They won the race without their top five runners from their last meet at Marshalltown and sixth runner Samantha Strauss ’21 lead the way for Johnston in this race finishing third overall with a time of 20:37. She was followed closely by Avery Kamienski ’19 and Lauren Urban ’19 who finished fifth and sixth with times of 20:45 and 20:53. Kaya Young ’20 and Lily Trenkamp ’22 rounded out the scorers finishing 14th and 15th with times of 21:15 and 21:16. The girls scored 43 points 20 better than second place Waukee who had 63 points. Paige Ryan ’22 and Abbie McClaren ’21 finished the top seven for the girls finishing 29th and 45th with times of 21:58 and 22:48.

The boys Cross Country team made improvements finishing fourth in the Varsity at the Tom Karpan Invite hosted by Valley High School, they won the JV race showing their depth behind the Varsity athletes. They only rested their top four runners keeping a strong team for this meet and it showed with Hunter Briggs ’20 leading the way finishing in 15th with a time of 17:36 and Nathan Tegeler ’20 finishing 22nd with a 17:42. Close behind them were Ben Kinman ’19 and Sam Schmitz ’20 finishing 29th and 30th with times of 17:48 and 17:49. Aidan MacGregor ’19 rounded out the scorers finishing 43rd with a time of 18:12. They ended with a 139 points one point above fifth place SE Polk who had 140 points. Nathan Kellar ’21 and Owen Ness ’19 finished the top seven finishing 52nd and 59th with times of 18:22 and 18:34.
