Girl Scout cookie season is fully underway and in recent years the infamous cookies have seen a big change. In 2020, Thanks-a-lots were discontinued after 15 years, the fudge-dipped shortbread cookie featured “Thank You” in 5 languages. In 2021, S’mores, a graham cracker cookie with cream icing coated in fudge was discontinued.

In central Iowa, Girl Scouts cookies are produced by ABC Bakers. Girl Scouts has two bakers ABC and Little Brownie Bakers there are regional differences in the cookies, most people are aware the bakers use different names for some cookies but they produced a different selection of cookies aside from the classics. ABC currently produces Adventurefuls, Caramel Chocolate Chip, Caramel deLites, Lemonades, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Shortbread, Thin Mints, and Toast-Yay! In the last ten years there has been a cookie that changes every couple of years first it was Cranberry Citrus Crisps then S’mores, and now Adventurefuls. Cookies will continue to be replaced while Girl Scouts and ABC try out new cookies. Some people were saddened by the news of Thanks-a-lots and S’mores being replaced but cookies come and go.

Thanks-a-lots were replaced by toast-yay!, a french toast inspired cookie, and S’mores were replaced with Adventurefuls a brownie inspired cookie topped with caramel and fudge. I tried both new cookies and to be honest I was unimpressed.

Instantly the toast-yay! cookie tasted familiar, these cookies are almost identical in flavor to cinnamon pop tarts. The cookies appear very plain and bland, similar to their predecessor (Thanks-a-lots).  These will definitely not be my new favorite cookie but I would recommend them if you like cinnamon toast crunch cereal or french toast in general.

Adventurfuls are produced by both ABC and Little Brownie Bakers. The “brownie inspired” cookie was an underwhelming experience. The cookies appear very decadent in product photos but the actual cookie is dull and messy in appearance. The caramel and sea salt were overpowered by the fudge frosting. I was expecting the cookie to be soft and chewy like a brownie instead it was a thicker crispier cookie. The cookies feature a chocolate cookies base topped with caramel in the center and fudge stripes. The combination of chocolate cookie and chocolate fudge make the cookie extremely chocolatey. I would recommend Adventurfuls to milk chocolate lovers.

Girl Scout cookies tend to be to love it or hate it, trying these new cookies you might just find your new favorite. If you do not want to risk purchasing cookies you will not like or have trouble deciding between the nine kinds, I recommend Thin Mints, Caramel deLites and Peanut Butter Patties. They are the most popular kinds and are likely to please even the pickiest cookie connoisseurs.
