New Trend: Wordle

New Trend: Wordle

Wordle is an online game in which you get six guesses to figure out what the five-letter word of that day is. Interestingly, the game only lets you do one puzzle every day and each player gets the same word. The only hints you get are the color coded letters; gray means that letter is not in the word, yellow means that letter is in the word but a different spot and green means that letter is correct and in that spot.

Wordle was created by Josh Wardle, a software engineer. However, Wardle recently sold the game to New York Times in late January. In a tweet on January 31st Wardle said, “The game got bigger than I ever imagined,” later saying “I’d be lying if I said this hasn’t been a little overwhelming.” Wardle promised to his game’s avid players that although he would not be the one in charge of Wordle anymore, the game would remain free to its players.

Just like any other trend, the game has made its way to our high school. Wordle has struck up conversations in many classrooms, some students asking what the game is while others share how many tries it took them to guess that days word. “It’s fun, I like that everyone does it but it’s frustrating sometimes,” said Charlie Sullivan ‘23. In a poll with 118 students 64% said they played Wordle while 36% did not. With a striking majority of students playing the game, it seems as if this trend will stick around for a while.
