It seems to be a trend in fall 2018 to make everything pumpkin spice flavored. Walking through the aisles in HyVee I saw everything from pumpkin spice cupcakes to pumpkin spice yogurt. I grabbed ten pumpkin spice products and decided to rank them one to ten.

10. Chobani Pumpkin Spice Greek Yogurt

I like Yoplait yogurt and they have several unique flavors, so I thought the pumpkin spice yogurt could either be a hit or a miss. The yogurt looked abnormally orange, and the consistency was very chunky. The smell was a mix of old cream cheese and artificial pumpkin, which wasn’t the greatest combination. I decided to ignore the awful smell and texture, and take a bite. That was a bad idea. The taste was so sour I had to immediately spit it out. The artificial pumpkin flavor tasted almost rotten, even though I only bought the yogurt a week before trying it. However, I didn’t realize it was Greek yogurt until I got home, and I’m pretty sure that’s why the taste was so sour. I would give the yogurt a 1/10. If it was regular yogurt I’m sure it would taste a lot sweeter. I do not recommend buying it.

9. Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese

I don’t like cream cheese in the first place, but I thought it was a weird product to be pumpkin spice flavored so I got it. The cream cheese was a bright burnt orange color, which wasn’t a very good sign. The texture reminded me of slime or putty, and it was very hard to spread. I usually don’t like any type of cream cheese, and this was no exception. The cream cheese tasted sour with a bit of pumpkin flavoring. The reason I don’t like plain cream cheese is because it’s not sweet. I thought the whole point of making foods pumpkin spice flavored was to make them sweet, but this was just as sour as ordinary cream cheese. It wasn’t as bad as the yogurt, but it’s not something I’d eat again. I’d give it a 3/10. If you like cream cheese you may want to try it, but I don’t like cream cheese in the first place so this never had a chance.

8. Land O Lakes Pumpkin Spice Butter

I’ve had cinnamon butter from Land O Lakes and it was very good, so I thought I’d try the pumpkin spice butter. The butter had a little bit of an orange tint, but for the most part it looked like regular butter. It spread a lot better than the cream cheese, but it was still hard to spread. The taste wasn’t that bad. It tasted like artificial pumpkin just like all of the other products, but the aftertaste was terrible. The pumpkin taste wasn’t sweet like I’d expect it to be, instead it was very bitter. I didn’t eat the butter plain so maybe that affected the taste, but most people don’t eat just butter. I would rate it 3.5/10. People may like it if they like the taste of artificial pumpkin, but personally I didn’t really like it.

7. Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte

I figured I’d have to include this, since it started the pumpkin spice trend. It was really warm when I got it, and it smelled pretty good. I personally don’t like a lot of coffee, so this drink wasn’t my favorite. I liked the initial cinnamon taste, but the bitter aftertaste wasn’t very good. Different people make pumpkin spice lattes at different Starbucks locations, so lattes would probably taste a little different every time someone orders them. I also got my latte at a Starbucks in Target, so they may not have all the supplies available at an actual Starbucks cafe. I would give it a 5.5/10. People would probably like this if they like coffee, but I personally don’t like the bitter taste.

6. Little Bites Pumpkin Muffins

I eat the Little Bites chocolate chip muffins all the time, so I had pretty high expectations for the pumpkin muffins. They looked like regular muffins with cinnamon on them. They were kind of sticky when I took them out of the package. The taste wasn’t bad. There was a little bit of a pumpkin taste, but it was underwhelming. The muffins were very soft and I really like this brand, but the taste of these muffins didn’t meet my expectations. I would give them a 6/10. I’d recommend them to people that have tried this brand and like foods such as pumpkin bread.

5. Pumpkin Spice Cheerios

I love regular and Honey Nut Cheerios so I thought this flavor could be good. The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was the very strong smell of cinnamon. However after the bag had been opened for a few minutes the smell went away. The appearance of the pumpkin spice Cheerios was very similar to the original, but it had a slight orange tint. The taste of the Cheerios were very plain with a little bit of cinnamon. The Cheerios tasted good but they were very bland. Overall I would give them a 7/10. I’d recommend them to people that like regular Cheerios and cinnamon flavored foods.

4. HyVee Brand Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

I’ve had HyVee’s pumpkin bars and they tasted really good, so I had to try their pumpkin spice cupcakes. They were smaller than ordinary cupcakes and the color was a mix between brown and orange, but for the most part they looked pretty normal. The cake itself was very soft, but the frosting was stiff and a little sticky. The taste was very good. The pumpkin flavoring wasn’t too strong, but you could still taste it. There was a little bit of cinnamon in the frosting, but it didn’t overpower the pumpkin like many of the other foods. Overall I’d give it a 7.25/10. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the frosting. I’d recommend this to people that like pumpkin flavored baked goods.

3. Pumpkin Spice Twinkies

I hadn’t had Twinkies in years and eating them made me very nostalgic. In the original Twinkies the filling was very strong and distracted from the flavor of the cake. However with the pumpkin spice Twinkies the filling was much less strong and it complimented the cake very well. The filling tasted mostly like cinnamon, but it wasn’t as strong as many of the other products I tasted. The pumpkin spice Twinkies had the same sponge-like cake as the originals. Overall I’d rate it 7.5/10 and I’d recommend it to people that like Twinkies and cinnamon.

2. Pumpkin Spice Swirl Bread

I used to always buy cinnamon bread from this brand and eat it for breakfast. I hadn’t had it in a couple years though. The flavor wasn’t super strong, but it tasted pretty good. It mostly tasted like cinnamon, and wasn’t very different from the cinnamon bread I used to eat. There was a little hint of pumpkin, but I wouldn’t think it was pumpkin spice flavored. The bread was harder than regular bread and seemed kind of stale, even though I bought it a few days before I tasted the food. I would give it a 8/10 because it was better than a lot of the other products I tried. I would recommend this to people that like cinnamon.

1. Edy’s Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream

I’d tasted this brand before but it wasn’t my go to brand. I didn’t expect HyVee to have pumpkin ice cream, but they did. The first thing I noticed when I opened the carton was the strong smell of cinnamon. It reminded me of a cinnamon scented candle. It was also a bright burnt orange color kind of like the cream cheese. There were little swirls of cinnamon scattered throughout the ice cream. The cinnamon was the primary flavor but there was quite a bit of pumpkin flavoring as well. I think the balance between pumpkin and cinnamon was very good. This was by far my favorite product and the only one that I actually finished. I would give it a 9.5/10 and I would recommend it to anyone that likes ice cream and cinnamon.
