Q & A with Dave Oldham, the recently hired science teacher

Jeremy Caracci, Staff Writer

> Where are you currently working?

I am currently working at the Columbus School, in Medellin Colombia.
Before that I was at the International Schula Am Rhine, in
Duesseldorf, Germany, and before that at Wheatley High School, in
Houston Texas.

> How did you hear about the job at Johnston?

I heard about the job on the internet in the Des Moines register.

> Why did you apply to Johnston?

My wife and I were planning to move to Des Moines after this school
year and Johnston was at the top of the list of places we would like
to live.

> How did the interview process go?

Well, as I am in Medellin, we did the interview via Skype and it went
well. I met with Mr. Reissen and some members of your science
department and we had a pretty good talk for about an hour, and then I
got a call the next day saying I got the job.

> Where did you go to college?

I got both my Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree from Trinity
University, in San Antonio, Texas

> What will you be teaching when you get to Johnston?

All I know for sure is that I will be teaching AP Chemistry, but I’m
sure I’ll be doing some other sciences as well.

> Where else have you taught?

I have taught 6th – 8th grade general science, 9th grade biology,
9th grade physical science, 10th grade chemistry, 11th and 12th grade
Physics, Pre-AP physics and chemistry, IB chemistry, IB biology,
organic chemistry and I’ve also coached baseball, basketball, tennis,
soccer, and rugby.

> What things you are looking forward to here at Johnston?

Everything. But seriously, everything. I have been teaching
internationally for the last four years and I’m ready to come back to
the states. I’m looking forward to speaking English and becoming a
part of the community.

> What things are you not looking forward to here at Johnston?

Your delicious food in Iowa! It’s hard to eat only one pork tenderloin
sandwich.

> What things have you heard about Johnston?

I have heard only good things. I have a couple friends from the Des
Moines area, and when I told them about the possibility of working in
your district every person said how it is the best. Seriously, they
were very jealous.

> Do you have a family?

Yes, I have a wife. And cats. And we are planning on getting a dog and
then sometime in the future a child.

> When are you planning on moving here?

I will move back to the states at the beginning of July.

> What things are you doing and what have you done to prepare for the move?

Well, packing up all my stuff! Also, looking in the Johnston area for
a place to live.
