Unpopular Thoughts: Twilight is Decent

Marandah Mangra-Dutcher, Staff Writer

Over ten years ago, the world was in a frenzy over the Twilight Saga books and movies. Some lived for the story and loved every word. Others disliked it, taking to the internet and others, to express their thoughts. Today, even though the series is not as prominent in everyday life as it once was, people still feel passionate about their opinions of the saga.

I believe that the Twilight Saga is decent. The movies can be awkward and definitely have their fair share of cringe-worthy moments, however they are still enjoyable. The books are well-written and I reread them from time to time. They are not my favorite but they are most certainly not the worst books I have ever read.

I understand that many people despise the books with a burning passion but in my eyes, these books have shaped our book world into what it is today.

The Twilight movies and books played a major role in how popular the idea of werewolves and vampires were in fantasy novels. Books did, of course, include vampires and werewolves way before Twilight but these books were so popular that they brought them into the public’s eye and kept them there. These books inspired so many other authors to write their own fantasy novels including these creatures.

The novels just inspired other authors, overall. For example the adult romance series “Fifty Shades of Grey”, the author originally wrote them as a Twilight Fan-Fiction.

I am an avid reader, and am actively reading in the majority of my spare time. I have read many, many Young Adult Fantasy novels and a great chunk of them include a love-triangle. A love-triangle is one of the major plot points within the Twilight Saga between the main character, Bella, and two boys, Edward and Jacob.

The movie adaptations of the books were also one of the first two-part movie endings, and many movie producers continued the two-part idea like “Harry Potter” and “The Hunger Games” which are both extremely successful franchises like Twilight.

The thoughts and ideas embedded into the “Twilight Saga” by Stephanie Meyer were spread to many other authors and shaped the books and movies that we love today. Many will believe they are still horrid pieces of literature and poor movies, but I believe that many stories that we know and love today would not exist, if not for Twilight.
