The MTV Video Music Awards are hardly ever uneventful, and Sunday was no different. Aug. 30 was a wild night that included a crying Justin Bieber, campaign announcements and Miley Cyrus being Miley Cyrus.

Getting Miley to be the host of the VMAs was already condemning the show to scandal. Cyrus was bound to do, say or wear something that would make everyones’ jaw drop. As it turned out it was not Cyrus who caused a stir, but rapper Nicki Minaj made jabs at Cyrus due to comments she made when Minaj was in a feud with singer Taylor Swift. Minaj made the comment as she accepted the award for Best Hip-Hop Video. “Now back to this [expletive] who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press,” Minaj said. “Miley, what’s good?”

Another popular moment from the night that was very talked about was Kanye West’s acceptance speech for his Vanguard Award. Since Taylor Swift was the one who presented the award to West, he took the time to apologize for his behavior during the 2009 VMAs (the whole “I’m gonna let you finish” thing). West then proceeded to use the term “bro” more times in a sentence than what should be humanly possible, and announced that he is to run for president in 2020. While it’s not certain yet whether West will follow up on that statement, it was something that the crowd went nuts for.

Justin Bieber made his return to the VMA stage after a bit of an absence. He sang “Where Are U Now” and “What Do You Mean”, and while my own Bieber-Fever broke about four years ago, it was a good show. He did aerial stunts above the crowd and it reminded me of a younger Bieber. However, one thing that caught some people off-guard was how he broke down in tears after his performance. People can speculate all they want about it but perhaps his harness was just too tight.

Like I mentioned above, the VMAs are never dull affairs. There are always one or two things that people will gossip about for about a week and then they’ll forget about them. Although I try and avoid talking about celebrity drama, it’s kind of hard not to.

• Premiere of the video for Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams” during the pre-show. She looked great and so did what I call her TaySquad.
• Jaden Smith drinking milk in the audience.
• Miley Cyrus’s outfits and certain things she said deserve their own article. Not that I’ll write it.
