Hinterland Music Festival: Day 2

  Hinterland Music Festival

Day 2: Aug. 1, doors opened at 12 pm

Highlights: Mainly looking forward to Brandi Carlile later on in the night, a few of the acts before her took me by surprise especially St. Paul and The Broken Bones. Though the day was hot and almost to the point of unbearable, lead singer Paul Janeway kept the crowd entertained with his booming soul filled voice. The band definitely opened my eyes to the genre and I thoroughly enjoyed the vibe they gave off throughout the show. The vocal duo, Lucius, that followed the explosive act was not as exciting to watch nor listen too. Vocalists Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe both have a subtle indie pop sound and harmonize wonderfully with one another, but after an act like St. Paul, it was a hard bar to reach. String bands aren’t my normal cup of tea, but Yonder Mountain String Band fit the folk festival vibe and a good toe tapper while laying down on a blanket in the grass. Finally Carlile made her appearance on stage alongside the musical Hanseroth twins at 8 pm full of smiles and energy during their performance. Carlile’s vocals were outstanding, her indie rock sound is stirred up by some country influence as well. Closing out the festival was Old Crow Medicine Show, another string band who performed with Carlile and the Hanseroth twins earlier, were also full of energy and colorful face paint, definitely a one of a kind act to end the evening. Overall Hinterland was a giant success, and if you love not only the festival atmosphere but some indie/folk rock music then check out the budding event next summer.
