Girls invited to become official Sweethearts

Applications are now being accepted for junior and senior girls interested in becoming American Heart Association Sweethearts.

Sweethearts is a group of girls who are taught how to live heart healthy lifestyles and they promote the prevention of heart disease by educating and volunteering in their communities. They meet once a month between October and May. Each session has a different focus, from heart healthy cooking to leadership skills.

The organization holds a Heart Ball, a high-scale party and dinner. Their season ends with the annual Heart Walk on June 14 in downtown Des Moines. Pick up a packet of information and an application in the guidance office.

Sweethearts are selected on a first-come, first-serve system and there is no set deadline for the application. There is a tax-deductable fee of $500 that can be fundraised or paid throughout the program. By being a Sweetheart students also receive 20 hours of service.
