The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both ran at the state meet held at Kennedy Park golf course in Fort Dodge Oct. 31. The teams both originally qualified for state after placing at the district meet at the DMACC campus Oct. 22.

In the girls race, the team placed seventh overall with sophomore Jessica Mckee finishing in 10th place and junior Emily Poss in 12th place. Both girls got all state honors, for the top 15 finishers are qualified as all state runners.

In the boys race, the team placed 11th overall. Senior Zach smith placed 14th in the race and became the third ever Johnston runner to qualify for all state. When Smith crossed the finish line he collapsed “I have never felt anything like it before” Smith said.

The cross country season is over, but both teams still train in preparation for the Nike Heartland Regional meet in Sioux Falls, SD Nov. 15.
