Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams win in Des Moines East

Carter Borwick ’21 competes at the Augustine Invite hosted by Des Moines East Oct. 4. Borwick finished fourth with a time of 17:18.

The varsity girls cross country team won their last meet before the postseason begins, dominating the Augustine Invite hosted by Des Moines East, they also won the JV race. They were lead by Brooke McKee ’20 and Paige Horner ’20 finishing first and second respectively with times of 19:29 and 19:31. These two are both contenders for an individual state championship with Horner being last year’s individual state champion and both being ranked in the top 15 individual runners in the state with McKee being seventh and Horner being 12th. Aleah Tenpas ’22 and Clara Toot ’20 also finished in the top ten finishing sixth and eighth respectively with times of 19:57 and 20:12. Tenpas is also ranked in the top 15 in state at 15th. Bella Heikes ’21, Bailey Vaughan ’22 and Avery Kamienski ’19 finished off the runners finishing 15th, 18th and 23rd respectively with times of 20:48, 20:58 and 22:05. They finished with 32 points winning by 13 points.

The varsity boys cross country team won their meet as well with the JV finishing one through eighteen with a perfect score. The boys were lead by Luke Perman ’19, Joe Schaefer ’19 and Carter Borwick ’21 who finished in second, third and fourth with times of 16:57, 17:17 and 17:18. Perman and Schaefer are ranked in the top 3o with Perman in tenth and Schaefer in 29th. Nathan Tegeler ’20, Sam Schmitz ’20 and Paxson Picken ’20 also finished in the top ten placing sixth, seventh, and ninth with times of 17:23, 17:36 and 17:46. Yohana Yual ’21 rounded off the runners finished 13th with a time of 17:52. They finished with 22 points, 19 points above second place Southeast Polk.
