I Get Too Emotionally Attached
May 9, 2020
I am a person who believes that it is okay to escape the real world for awhile, whether it be through movies, shows or books. However, the problem I have is that I get too emotionally attached to the characters and the plot that the fictional world creates.
I can not count the amount of times I have cried over fictional characters. I have cried because they died, and I have cried because they got a happy ending. I have gotten so mad by some of the decisions the characters make that I actually threw a book across the room. In fact I am watching a show on Amazon Prime called “Wildfire” and I want to punch each character in the face for everything that has happened.
When I start to disagree or get frustrated with a book or show, I start to add commentary after a character makes a decision. My mom and sisters sometimes hear me, and they have gotten to the point where they just roll their eyes and they go with it. Sometimes they laugh, however sometimes they think I need to put down the movie and show and take a break. Take time to come back to reality.
I understand that a lot of writers, whether they write their own books or scripts, write to make their audience feel something. They choose the decisions that their characters make with the audience in mind but also with the character development in mind. However, with all of the books and shows that I have watched in my life I can say a lot of them achieved their purpose.
I will pick up specific books or watch specific shows when I need to feel happy, or I need to let out some tears. For example, my go to show when I need a good laugh is “Friends.” It is a good comedy show and the writers wrote it in order for people like me to watch it.
Books, shows and movies are made for people. They are made so people can escape their own worlds for awhile. I get emotionally attached to the fictional worlds that the writers create, but I am not the only one. People watch shows and read books so they can feel something. That is one of the most important reasons that these types of things exist.
