Sophomores take Vaudeville Mews
April 28, 2014
Sophomores Grant Ganzer and Joe Thatcher opened for a band downtown at Vaudeville Mews April 24. A crowd of Johnston students came for support, as well as local band, 515, whose drummer, junior Shane Burgess, played the cajon (a drum you sit on) for them. Their set included songs from artists Allen Stone, The Black Keys, U2 and various others. Ganzer also sang an original song entitled “June” that he wrote for his sister.
The Vaudeville Mews crowd was the first one to hear it. “I think it definitely went well,” Thatcher said. “There were a few kinks but that stuff happens when playing live.” Throughout the show Ganzer worked the crowd, cracking jokes and complementing the front row saying, “It’s never too late to join them.”
Sophomore Sophia Cresta took a 10-second video of the boys playing the song “Sex and Candy” and posted it on SnapChat. “It was impressive that Grant could hit those notes. I took the video at the best part of the song,” Cresta said. Ganzer and Thatcher are both members of the chamber choirs at the high school and devote lots of time to their music. Ganzer plans to continue music as his profession.
