Senior Tyson Wieland broke the school varsity 3200 meter record April 6, at the Valley Track Invitational. Saturday was Wieland’s first time running the 3200 on varsity. His previous JV record for this event was 10:25, while his new record is 9:39:19. The previous record, 9:42:17 was held for 11 years.
As Wileand crossed the finish line he took about three steps and fell to his knees off the track, feeling like he had just broke his knee. After being on the ground for a short time he was lifted up by two people. One was the Valley coach who told him he had an amazing race and the other was his teammate, junior Adam Johanson.
“I went to my coaches who were waiting for me, tears of joy started to well up and I gave them both a hug and let it all sink in,” Wieland said.
Wieland earned the record and time to qualify for the Drake Relays that will take place this April.
