Car smashing for a cause

Students will get the opportunity to smash a car during homecoming week.

Participants will use a sledgehammer to smash the car. The car will be covered in Ankeny’s colors and logo, because they are the opponent at the homecoming game.

“We are taking a trailer with the car on it to the practice field,” student council member Liera Bender said. “And then (after the event is over) taking it back on the trailer, well what’s left of it at least.”

The car smash will take place Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m., right after the parade and during the powder puff game. All students have to do is show up. Two dollars buys one hit and  $5  buys three.

The car will have no glass and the engine will be taken out. “That way we prevent any injuries from flying glass,” Bender said.

The last time there was a car smash was in 2006. The student council decided to bring back the old tradition. “(The student council) just got a committee together, called some people, got it approved and boom we were set,” Bender said.

All the proceeds will  go to Dig Pink Spike Blue.

“There’s still some work to do, but the event should be pretty fun,” Bender said. “We hope to see a lot of people come out and smash the car up!”
