Girls golf welcomes new players

Girls golf has a new coach. Math teacher Steve Smith is taking over for Vicki Borich who was the coach for the last  seven years.

Smith coached boys and girls golf for 18 years, until Borich began. For the last seven years, Smith has solely been the boys coach.

“I coached both for two years,” Smith said. “I gave one up for a little while as my boys were getting older and I needed time to do things with them.”

Now Smith will be the boys and girls golf coach. Because Smith has already been the girls coach, he knows what lies ahead.

“I’m very excited about it,” Smith said. “I always had fun coaching, the girls learned a lot about golf, some about being competitive but mostly about being great teammates and I’m just looking forward to doing that again.”

The main goal for the coming spring season is to have more girls interested in golf.

“I’m hoping that we can get a few more girls out,” Smith said. “You don’t have to have any experience, you don’t ever have had to play before, I’ll show you and you’ll get to go out and have fun with your friends and play a little golf.”
