JMS discusses policy for locking doors

Middle school staff met Jan. 30 and plan to meet Feb. 6 to discuss safety.

The doors into the middle school do not lock during the day. The high schools doors lock at 8 a.m. and 8:35 a.m. on late start Wednesdays for safety reasons, with the exceptions of the main and athletic doors.

“During our meetings we will be discussing increased safety procedures and locking classroom doors will be one item of discussion,” middle school principal Brian Carico said.

The decision to lock the doors involves more than just staff at JMS.

“We are in discussions with Johnston Police, Johnston Fire and with other agencies that help provide information on best practices,” Carico said. “There is not one particular individual that is making safety decisions, but many that have been involved.”
