Musical rewarded for hard work

The school musical “Footloose”cast gained the attention of the Iowa Musical Theater Awards, which are presented by Des Moines Performing Arts. A panel of judges travels to schools within 125 miles of the Des Moines Civic Center and judge the schools’ production. After they have watched all of the musicals, they present awards to the productions that they judged.

The cast was invited to attend the Awards Showcase which will be held at the Civic Center June 6. Because they received the Outstanding Overall Performance Award, they will perform a two-three minute scene at the Awards Showcase. They chose to perform the opening song because it has no dialogue, and some members of the cast are unable to attend. There were five members of the cast nominated to perform in the opening act of the Awards Ceremony. They will learn a new song, and work with a professional choreographer to perfect the number.

The judging process is not for just critiquing, but for educational feedback to help the production improve.

Production Awards: Outstanding Overall Performance, Outstanding Ensemble and Outstanding Student Orchestra.

Individual Awards: junior Luke Safris, senior Greta Hammond, senior Seth Tack and senior Hannah Miedema.
