Boys’ swimming sweeps the competition

In an invitational held at Summit Jan. 9, the boy’s swim team defeated eight other schools to win first place at the meet. Both JV and varsity teams swam, and the Dragons scored the most amount of points, totaling 332 points to win the meet. Currently the team is ranked number two in the state, and defeated the number one ranked team, Waukee, by 20 points.

Urbandale senior Stjepan Fiolic, who competes for Johnston, also broke the current Summit Pool Record in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:42.56. The previously held pool record was 1:44.85. Fiolic ranks first on the team in six out of the eight possible individual races.

Johnston received five first place wins at the invitational. Two of these wins were by junior Grant Fuhr, who won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle. “As a team, we swam incredibly well at the invite,” Fuhr said. “We previously lost to Waukee in a dual meet. This time, we were motivated to beat them. I’m fairly certain that everyone dropped time in at least one event.”

The Dragons swim next Thursday, Jan. 14 at the Ankeny YMCA at 5:30 PM.
