Girls’ varsity softball defeats Pleasant Valley to win state title

The girls’ varsity softball team defeated the Pleasant Valley Spartans 3-2 in the 5-A State Championship finals to win their third state title since 2009. The game took place in Fort Dodge Friday, July 22 at the Harlan Rogers Sports Complex. This was their fourth consecutive state finals game.

Both teams kept scores at 0-0 until the sixth inning, when Dragons put up one run. Spartans responded with two runs during the seventh. Graduated senior Haley Pemble’s base hit put runners on first and second bases, which were then fully loaded after graduated senior Mercedes Worsfold bunted and made it to first base safely. With two outs, rising senior Brooke Wilmes was walked to first to tie the score 2-2. Graduated senior Brooke Sandstoe’s walk-off single secured another run and the 5-A State Champions title.

Rising seniors Ally Shaer and Brooke Wilmes were named to the All-Tournament Team alongside graduated senior Haylee Towers, who was also named as captain.

The girls’ varsity team advanced to the state finals last year but fell short to the Waukee Warriors 6-4.
